Stop and go: the challenges of personal mobility

Mobility has always been my passion and lifeblood. So when a couple of curious minds invented the car, I could sense that exciting times were ahead.

Initially, the car was a dirty, inefficient, and rather cumbersome invention. However, the advent of airbags, catalytic converters, and power steering boosted the car’s appeal, adding convenience, safety, and sophistication to its repertoire. The car’s unprecedented spike in popularity quickly transformed modern life as we know it. And while I enjoy the buzz cars bring to the city, the sheer scale of traffic has become a bit daunting. In a metropolis like London, the average speed has already dropped to a mere 8–9 miles per hour and it’s set to plummet even further due to ever-increasing volumes of traffic. 

So here’s the question: how can we ensure a safe, smooth, and seamless traffic flow to make each ride a stress-free and pleasurable experience?

Connecting safety and sustainability

Although their basic shape hasn’t changed much, countless upgrades under the hood have made cars a lot more intelligent. The latest futuristic twist has given us driverless cars. And while the missing steering wheel will take a bit of getting used to, it’s a brave new future supported by an innovative range of interconnected features.

Next generation semiconductor chips, boasting structures barely visible to the human eye, are based on innovative integrated circuits mounted into sensors that help to keep our connected cars on track. And, due to the sheer sophistication of in-car electronics and connectivity options, the typical number of chips used in a car is set to jump from three to approximately 30. Small but smart: these chips not only ensure that the vehicle reaches its destination, they also shorten trips and increase traffic safety thanks to improved car-to-car and car-to-X (communication between a car and other traffic participants) systems, facilitating safe and intelligent traffic management.

Add smart safety features like high-resolution adaptive headlights and coatings that improve night vision to the equation and I might even look forward to the next rush hour!

Best of all, the combination of these intelligent innovations helps to drive sustainability: more efficient routing means less pollution. Anti-scratch coatings reduce repairs, and the extra power provided by organic solar panels helps to optimize fuel consumption.

Putting safety and sustainability features to one side, tomorrow’s people carriers also offer plenty to please the eye and capture the imagination of passengers. It might just be a result of the eye-catching effect pigments, but all these developments have left me a bit dazzled – there’s just so much to take in!
